An overview of how prerequisites function within Canvas.
Prerequisites In Canvas
Canvas modules offer the ability to set a prerequisite module by locking subsequent modules until defined requirements have been met. If the prerequisite module does not contain completion requirements, the following module will not be locked.
- To add prerequisites to a module, select the Modules link in the Course Navigation menu. Click on "Edit" from the drop-down menu, confirm the module, and then click the “+ Prerequisite” button.
- In the module drop-down menu, select the module that students must complete before progressing. This is a required step.
- Add a prerequisite by clicking on the “+Prerequisite button.” Modules prior to the selected module will appear in a drop-down menu. Select a module.
- Click the "Save" button in the bottom right-hand corner of the pop-up window.
If the goal is to ensure students complete modules in order, add prerequisites for all modules that come before the current module.
