An overview of New and Classic Quizzes in Canvas that features information on question banks.
Quizzes in Canvas
Firstly, it is important to note that Canvas maintains help guides on Quizzes and New Quizzes. By default, instructors can only create New Quizzes. Quizzes, sometimes called Classic Quizzes, will phase out eventually. Here is a comparison chart that details the respective functionality.
- To create a New Quiz, click the “Quizzes” link in the In Course Navigation menu. Quizzes can also be accessed from the Assignments page. Select the “+Quiz/Survey” button. A pop up will provide space for quiz details.

- A title, or "Assignment name," is required. Instructors may determine whether or not the quiz is graded, the point value and grade type, submission type, and assign access to participants within the course. Instructors may choose to omit the quiz from the final grade, grade anonymously, and to anonymize instructor annotations.
- To add descriptive content to a quiz, select the “Build” option via the blue button at the bottom of the page. Here, instructors can edit the title and description of the quiz and use the Rich Content Editor to format and contextualize quiz instructions.
- To add question types to the quiz, select to the "Questions" tabbed link towards the top of the page, scroll to the bottom of the page, and click the “+New Question” button.

The following question types are available in New Quizzes:
For each selected question type, a title, question or problem as viewed by the test-taker, and answers may be added. Questions may also be added to a question bank. Points and feedback may be designated at this juncture. To save a quiz question, click the “Done” button.
Questions can be reordered by clicking on the "Questions" tabbed link at the top of the page and clicking the "Move Item" dots at the top left of a given question box, or by clicking and holding the dots to drag the question to a new location.
