More Time to Submit Assignments

When editing the settings for a new Assignment, instructors may determine the date that the assignment is due, when it becomes available, and when submissions close. Some instructors choose to make the “Until” setting a few days after the “Due Date” to allow time for late submissions. To add an accommodation that allots for additional days to submit work, follow the steps below.

  1. First, set the general due date for the Assignment. Select the option to edit the assignment, then, in the Assignment Details, navigate to the section labelled “Assign Access.” When an initial due date is added to the assignment, the “Assign To" field will populate with "Everyone" participating in the course. Assign the desired date(s).

Note: When editing a new Assignment, submission deadlines include options for the Due Date, availability date, and submission close date ("Until"). Some instructors set the "Until" date a few days after the "Due Date" to account for late submissions.

  2. Below the recorded dates, select "+ Assign To" to create new due dates to accommodate participants that need additional time. In the new box, use the "Assign To" field to add the specific student or students with accommodations. The previous dates will automatically change to "Everyone else." Add the new due date based on the student's accommodation (e.g., two days after the initial due date for a two-day extension). Assign other dates as needed.

  3. When you save this change, you will now see two different due dates and who they are for displayed on the Assignment’s page.

Chunking an Assessment

Some students may require "chunked" assessments. This accommodation ensures that if a student needs to pause and resume an exam later, they only see the specific sections they have already completed

In Canvas, you can display questions all at once or one at a time. To set a Quiz to display one question per page, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to your Quiz and click "Build". (If you are on the "Quiz Details" page, click "Build" at the bottom of the screen).

The Details page of a Canvas Quiz with a blue button labelled “Build.”

  2. Navigate to the Settings tab and toggle "Time limit" On (green tab with a check mark).

The Settings menu accessible in a Canvas Quiz with the Time Limit setting active and a limit of 1 hour and 0 minutes displayed.

  3. Optional: Choose whether to allow or disallow Backtracking. If you disallow backtracking, students cannot return to a previous question once they have moved forward.

A setting labelled “One question at a time” set to active with a checkbox next to an “Allow Backtracking” option
