Body
Reusing course material from past courses (from either Moodle or Canvas) is done using the import function.
Overview
This process works to import past course materials from any existing Canvas course. For Fall 2026, you will likely be importing material from a migrated Moodle course, but the process will be the same each semester when you move materials from a past Canvas course to an upcoming Canvas course.
Steps
Before you Start, make note:
- It's a good idea to thoroughly inspect the course materials you are importing, to catch if anything is missing or needs adjustment
- Some specific content types from Moodle will need additional attention. See this list for details: Moodle to Canvas Migration Comparison By Feature
-
Open your upcoming course in Canvas.
-
On the home page, click Import Existing Content.
-
From the Select Content Type menu, choose Copy a Canvas Course.

-
Select the course from your course list that contains the materials you want to import.
-
(Recommended) Click the Select Specific Content option.
-
If you’re certain you want everything, you can choose the All Content option instead. This will allow you to skip steps 8 through 10.
-
(Optional) Check the Adjust events and due dates button to have Canvas move past due dates into approximate due dates for the coming semester.
-
Enter all four dates in the boxes that appear when this option is checked. The dates will not adjust if you omit one of the four dates.
-
Click Add to Import Queue.
-
Select content to import.
-
Under the Progress heading, click Select Content.

-
Check the specific assignments, pages, and other content you want to import.

-
Click Select Content to confirm
-
Verify imported materials - Once completed, visit the Modules page or home page of your course to see the imported content.
