Using Gradescope with Canvas

All instructors have access to the Gradescope integration in Canvas. This allows instructors to make Assignments in Canvas that link Gradescope assignments for ease of grading. An instructor may choose to use Gradescope for certain advantages, such as ease of grading student work completed by hand, and the ability to grade responses by question rather than by student.

Getting Started

Instructors who would like to use Gradescope through Canvas should follow the official Gradescope guide, Using Gradescope LTI 1.3 with Canvas as an instructor. This step-by-step guide provides information about how to first link your Canvas course to Gradescope, then sync your roster, and then create and link assignments.

Gradescope also offers a troubleshooting guide,  Troubleshooting Canvas Issues for Instructors.

Due Dates

Linking your Gradescope assignments to Canvas through the steps provided by Gradescope will allow some information to be passed through the two platforms. This means that grades awarded in Gradescope will be reflected in the Canvas gradebook. However, due dates are not automatically passed between platforms.

Gradescope assignments require dates in their platform as a condition of creating the assignment. If you would like due dates to display in Canvas as well, you will need to set those dates in Canvas.

You can view and change the due dates for all Assignments in a Canvas course from one screen by navigating to the Assignments page of your course. On that page, select the three dot menu to the right of the +Assignment button. Then select Edit Assignment Dates to bring you to a page where you can edit the dates for every Assignment in the course.

To set due dates in Canvas for an individual Gradescope assignment, use the following steps:

  1. Navigate to the Gradescope assignment in Modules or Assignments and select the three dot menu on the right. Then choose the Edit option. A screenshot showing the Edit option next to a Canvas Assignment.
  2. Set the due date to align with the date in Gradescope. You can also ensure the correct point values are set for the assignment. A screenshot showing fields to edit a Canvas Assignment's due date and point value.
  3. If you are done, select Save. If you’d like to further set dates for when the assignment is available from and until, select More Options.
  4. Choosing More Options brings you to the standard page for Assignment settings. You can customize the access dates on this page and save when you are done.
