Body
Classroom podium computers are configured for ease of use. Understand how to perform basic functions.
Overview
Windows and macOS computers at podiums are configured to automatically log in to a restricted user account at each restart. Restarting the computer at the end of your session protects your account and makes the computer available for the next class.
Basic tasks - all Computers
Automatic Log In
- Computers are configured to automatically log in to a restricted user account at each restart.
- Computers are restarted each morning.
If a computer is not ready for use at the generic desktop, you can try power cycling the computer. Call the LITS Technology Helpdesk at x2600 to report an issue.
Restart after class
Restarting the computer each time when you are done protects your MHC Account and data that you have access to, such as Google Mail and the course management system.
- Restart the computer when you are done.
- You can go to the Apple menu/Windows menu and select Restart.
- Please avoid shutting it down so the next instructor does not need to wait for the computer to power on.
macOS Video and Sound
macOS Screen Mirroring
Do you like to have the same thing on the computer display as is on the screen? That's called screen mirroring. Other folks prefer to extend the screen to double their working space. Either way, switching is easy, and it works the same whether you're using the on-podium computer or your own laptop.
The computer will recognize when a secondary screen is connected and available. There are several ways to change display settings.
- Keyboard shortcut
- With most keyboards, you can use the shortcut [⌘] [F1] (command + Function1) to toggle between screen mirroring and extended screen.
- System Settings
- You can also go into System Settings > Displays.
- Select the image for the projector screen, "ExtronScalerD."
- Choose "mirror for built-in display" to show the same thing on the projector screen as on the computer display.
- If it's already mirroring and you want to extend, select "stop mirroring."
- Menu Icon
- Select the Screen Mirroring icon in the menu bar at the top right side of the screen near the date and time. The Screen Mirroring icon may be purple and looks like two rectangles stacked one on top of the other.
- Expand the "ExtronScalerD" item and select "Change."
- Under "What do you want to show on 'ExtronScalerD'?" choose "Entire Screen" then select "Start Mirroring."
macOS Room Speaker Audio
If you cannot hear audio through the room's speakers, set the correct output:
- Go to System Settings > Sound.
- Under Output & Input, select Output.
- Choose the "ExtronScalerD" device, type HDMI.
- Adjust your volume with the slider, or with the keyboard keys.
