How to Install Read&Write Software for Mac or PC

Read&Write is literacy software with tools designed for reading, writing, study, and research support. It’s useful for students, faculty, and staff with additional language or literacy needs, or those who need limited screen-time.

Follow the instructions below to install Read&Write on macOS or Windows.

Download Read&Write for macOS

  1. Go to www.texthelp.com/products/read-and-write-education/. You should see a homepage that looks like this:

  1. Click on the pink button that says “Try Read&Write.” A list of options related to different operating systems (ex: Mac, Windows, etc.) will appear. Choose the operating system that is relevant to you. This will trigger a download of the Read&Write software.

 

  1. Navigate to the “Downloads” folder on your computer. Double click the file named “Read&Write.”  (Note: On a Mac computer it will be a .dmg file.)

 

  1. As directed by the pop-up after double-clicking, drag and drop the file into the Applications folder. If done correctly, you should see a small pop-up indicating that Read&Write is being copied to Applications.

 

  1. You may receive a safety/security pop-up asking if you are sure you want to install Read&Write, as it is a file downloaded from the Internet. Click “Yes,” or “Continue.”
  2. Find Read&Write on your computer. Navigate to the Applications folder. Double click on Read&Write to open the application.

 

  1. After you open the application, you will see a pop-up indicating that Read&Write requires Assistive Devices to be enabled with instructions on how to do so.

 

 

  1. Either click on the “Security & Privacybutton on the page that Read&Write generates, or navigate to Security & PrivacyAccessibility in System Settings. You should be brought to a page that lists a few applications, including Read&Write. Toggle on the button for Read&Write.

 

  1. You will be prompted to put in your username and password in order to enable settings needed for Read&Write to run on your computer. Enter the username and password for your computer, not your Mount Holyoke College username and password.

 

  1. Navigate back to the Read&Write application and select “Continue.”

 

  1. You will be prompted to allow Read&Write to access System Events. Select “OK.”

 

  1. You will be prompted to accept Read&Write’s User Terms. Check the box for “I accept the User Terms,” then click “OK.”

 

  1. Once you have accepted the User Terms, you will be prompted to log in. Select “Sign in with Google.” This will bring you to Google Chrome.

  1. You may be asked to allow Read&Write to have access to Google Chrome. If you receive this pop-up, select “OK” to proceed.

 

  1. Sign in using your Mount Holyoke College credentials. Once you have signed in, you should receive a pop-up indicating that you are all set to use Read&Write.

 

  1. The Read&Write software may open automatically. If the application has been closed, you can either locate the Read&Write logo in your dock or navigate to the “Applications” folder to re-open Read&Write. You should see a toolbar pop up that looks like this:

If you would prefer for your toolbar to sit horizontally rather than vertically, you can drag it to the top or bottom of your screen and it will shift automatically. 


 

 

Download Read&Write for Windows

  1. Go to www.texthelp.com/products/read-and-write-education/. You should see a homepage that looks like this:

  1. The install wizard will start. You may be asked if you want to give permission for your computer to install the program.  Click OK
  2. You will see a pop-up asking you to Accept and Install. Click to allow.

 

  1. Find Read&Write on your computer. Navigate to your desktop and double click on the Read&Write purple puzzle piece icon to open the program.
