Get started with Mathematica

Overview

Follow these steps to get Mathematica set up on your computer. Students, faculty, and staff can install Mathematica on personally-owned computers. Faculty and staff can also install it on an MHC-owned computer assigned to them. 

 

Where to start

Download the software

  1. Go to www.wolfram.com/siteinfo
  2. Enter your MHC email address
  3. Check the box to agree to the Wolfram Privacy Policy
  4. Choose Continue
  5. Use the down arrow next to "Download for Desktop" to select the version of the software for your operating system

  1. If you haven't used Mathematica at MHC before, you'll be asked to log in:  
    1. Enter your full MHC email address 
    2. If prompted, enter your MHC username (no @mtholyoke.edu) and your MHC Account password on the blue and white MHC Login screen
    3. If prompted, complete Duo MFA
  2. Select a downloads location for the installer file and select Save

 

Install the application

  1. Open the installer file
  2. Follow the prompts to begin installation
  3. If prompted by your computer, confirm that you would like to open the app even though it was downloaded from the internet
  4. If prompted, confirm the default download directory
  5. Follow the status in the Wolfram Download Manager screen that pops upScreenshot of the Wolfram download manager showing installation in progress
  6. When the application is installed, select LaunchUploaded Image (Thumbnail)
  1. Follow the steps in the installation wizard
  2. When the install wizard completes, drag the Wolfram application icon to your Applications folder screenshot of the apple finder window that opens to prompt you to drag the application to your applications folder

 

Activate the application

  1. Find the Wolfram application in your applications folder
    • If it isn't there, search in Volumes and attempt to move it to your applications folder. You don't want to be using it from the volume since you'll want to eject it when you are finished with setting up the application.
  2. Open the Wolfram application
  3. The screen should say "Sign in to activate your product"
  4. Select Continue 
  5. A new tab should open in your default browser
  6. Enter your MHC email address
  7. If prompted, enter your MHC username and password on the blue and white MHC login screen and complete Duo MFA
  8. If it's not already selected, select the Mathematica site license

  10. Go back to the software
  11. Accept the license agreement
  12. You are now able to use Mathematica
