How to share your pronouns with the MHC community, plus answers to frequently asked questions.
Overview
Mount Holyoke College is committed to affirming the self-determination and expression of all members of the campus community across College communications, documents and systems. Inviting the sharing of personal pronouns is a practice grounded in the College’s commitment to the equitable inclusion of trans and gender-nonconforming (TGNC) people and to addressing MHC systems that have excluded and marginalized students, faculty, staff and alums on the basis of gender identity and/or expression. For more, read MHC's Pronoun Policy.

Frequently asked questions
Mount Holyoke College is committed to affirming the self-determination and expression of all members of the campus community across College communications, documents and systems. Inviting the sharing of personal pronouns is a practice grounded in the College’s commitment to the equitable inclusion of trans and gender-nonconforming (TGNC) people and to addressing MHC systems that have excluded and marginalized students, faculty, staff and alums on the basis of gender identity and/or expression. Collecting pronouns is an effort to operationalize Mount Holyoke’s commitment to affirming people's self-determined identities and overtly acknowledge that displaying a person’s pronouns is a vital means of accurately identifying them.
For more information on why sharing pronouns is important to our community as we live into our values as a gender-diverse women's college, please check out the following resource:
Resources on personal pronouns.
The list of pronouns was determined through close consultation with trans and gender-nonconforming (TGNC) campus constituencies as well as other interested committees and groups. We offer pronoun sets (i.e., They/Them/Theirs) and combinations of pronoun sets (i.e., She/They and They/She) and are continuously seeking feedback and recommendations. Please contact diversity@mtholyoke.edu with your insights and input.

At this point, we are not able to automatically interface pronouns you share in MHC systems with Five College systems. If you take a class at one of the other Five Colleges, you can work with their Registrar’s Office to see about adding your pronouns to their systems.
We strive to make College systems display users’ pronouns and have implemented them in as many places as we’ve been able to so far. Please understand in some instances, the College may not be able to change a system’s behavior.
There are limited circumstances where this is possible.
If you enter your pronouns using the instructions at the top of this article, they will go to all the systems that have been integrated to receive pronouns from that system (see "Where will my pronouns display?" above). There are technical limitations which currently prevent us from displaying centrally-entered pronouns in some of the systems we've integrated to receive pronouns, but not in others.
However, not all of of the systems that can display pronouns are integrated to receive the ones you share centrally. This means they can have different values from what you enter centrally.
For example, a student could share one set of pronouns from the College's list as their centrally-entered pronouns in my.mtholyoke (which will will feed Google, Moodle, and other systems that are integrated to receive centrally-entered pronouns). The same student could share different pronouns with the Counseling Center (to go into their system Titanium) and enter completely different pronouns in Zoom.
No, you are not required to share your pronouns.
