Classroom podium computers are configured for ease of use. Understand how to perform basic functions.
Overview
Use your MHC Account credentials to log in to your personal, local account on a classroom podium computer. Documents and settings you save there will persist on this computer until it is erased and reconfigured, usually at the end of the school year.
Basic tasks - macOS Computers
Log In
- Use your MHC username (without @mtholyoke.edu) and MHC password at the login window.
- The first time you log in to a given computer, it will take a moment to create your local account. The screen may temporarily go black while the account is created. This should take no more than a minute. (We've timed it!)
- Subsequent logins will take no longer than normal, such as on your own computer.
Log Out
Logging out each time when you are done protects your MHC Account and data that you have access to, such as Google Mail and the course management system.
- Log out of your account (or restart the computer) when you are done.
- You can go to the Apple menu and select Log Out or use the keyboard shortcut [⌘] [⇧] [Q] (command + shift + Q)
- You can also restart the computer, but please avoid shutting it down so the next instructor does not need to wait for it to power on.
Screen Mirroring
Do you like to have the same thing on the computer display as is on the screen? That's called screen mirroring. Other folks prefer to extend the screen to double their working space. Either way, switching is easy, and it works the same whether you're using the on-podium computer or your own laptop.
The computer will recognize when a secondary screen is connected and available. There are several ways to change display settings.
- Keyboard shortcut
- With most keyboards, you can use the shortcut [⌘] [F1] (command + Function1) to toggle between screen mirroring and extended screen.
- System Settings
- You can also go into System Settings > Displays.
- Select the image for the projector screen, "ExtronScalerD."
- Choose "mirror for built-in display" to show the same thing on the projector screen as on the computer display.
- If it's already mirroring and you want to extend, select "stop mirroring."
- Menu Icon
- Select the Screen Mirroring icon in the menu bar at the top right side of the screen near the date and time. The Screen Mirroring icon may be purple and looks like two rectangles stacked one on top of the other.
- Expand the "ExtronScalerD" item and select "Change."
- Under "What do you want to show on 'ExtronScalerD'?" choose "Entire Screen" then select "Start Mirroring."
Room Speaker Audio
If you cannot hear audio through the room's speakers, set the correct output:
- Go to System Settings > Sound.
- Under Output & Input, select Output.
- Choose the "ExtronScalerD" device, type HDMI.
- Adjust your volume with the slider, or with the keyboard keys.
