Accessibility in Canvas

Design your course with accessibility in mind. Canvas has built-in tools for access for all students. Use the left-hand menu to find the Accessibility Checker and information on student accommodations. MHC Tip: Contact Disability Services for questions about student accommodations.

The Accessibility Checker

The Rich Content Editor (RCE) includes an Accessibility Checker to help create content meeting basic accessibility standards. For more details, see the Canvas Accessibility Toolkit.

Follow the steps outline below to use the Accessibility Checker on drafted content.

  1. Locate the Accessibility Checker icon at the bottom right of the RCE:
The Canvas Rich Text Editor with the Accessibility Checker icon highlighted.
  2. The icon is accompanied by a blue circle with a “1” inside of it, indicating that the example has two basic design elements that may make it challenging for students to engage with the content. For more information about the elements that may be adjusted to improve accessibility, click on the icon.

  3. The Accessibility Checker sidebar will launch on the right-hand side of the page, and each item requiring attention will display in sequence. The Accessibility Checker will indicate each item by highlighting it or, in the case of images, aligning the rich text editor to center on the item.

In the example below, the Accessibility Checker advises that the author change the text color to increase contrast and readability.

4. Once all advised edits have been applied, the Accessibility Checker sidebar will indicate that there are no accessibility issues detected.
