An overview of roles that instructors may assign to Canvas course participants.
Role in Canvas
Below is a brief overview of roles in MHC’s Canvas instance. If you would like more information about the permissions associated with a given role, or would like assistance with determining the best fit for a course participant or colleague, please contact the Ed Tech team.

Teacher
|
This role grants full course administrative access to a given course.
|
|
Non-Editing Teacher
|
|
|
Student
|
The most commonly-assigned role. Student permissions are restricted while maintaining the ability to interact with course materials and submit assignments. Abilities include creating, posting, and viewing Discussions.

|
Waitlisted
|
A waitlisted student is awaiting official registration, and in this role has the same access and permissions as a student.
|
|
Registration in Progress
|
This role has the same access and permissions as a student except for the ability to send messages to individual course members.
|
|
TA (Teaching Assistant)
|
The TA role is intended to support the teacher role. TAs have permissions similar to teachers except for limited access to student data (including grades).

|
Grading TA
|
Derived from the TA role, the Grading TA can view and edit student grades.
|
|
Student Mentor
|
Derived from the TA role, the Student Mentor is further restricted from viewing course analytics, changing the published status of a course, or moderating Discussions.
|
|
Auditor
|
This role is identical in permissions to the Registration in Progress role and is designed for Auditors as designated through the Registrar’s Office.
|
|
Designer
|
Intended for users assisting with course design (as an example, a program manager would be a candidate for this role). Designers can add users, access content, and create Modules, Discussions, and Assignments. Designers cannot view course analytics or student grades.

|
Observer
|
An individual assigned this role is typically a mentor, parent/guardian, or advisor linked to a specific student to view their progress. In terms of course content, an Observer can only view Announcements and Discussions.
