An overview of the Attendance external tool in Canvas.
Attendance in Canvas
Mount Holyoke College has enabled use of the Attendance (Roll Call) tool in Canvas. This tool can be used by instructors to mark students' attendance in their class.
Instructors, make note: In Moodle, the Attendance tool allowed students to mark their own attendance. In Canvas, Attendance must be recorded by an instructor, and there is no built-in option for students recording their own. If you would like to set up an option for students to mark their own attendance, feel free to get in touch with us at edtech@mtholyoke.edu.
By default, the Attendance tool is hidden in courses. Instructors can enable the tool by using the following steps:
- On the left sidebar of your course (the one that contains Home, Modules, Assignments, etc), scroll down to the bottom and click Settings.
- On the Settings page, look near the top for the Navigation tab, and click it.
- On the Navigation page, there are two lists of course tools; the list on the top is active items, and lower down are the inactive items. Find Attendance in the list, and use the three-dot menu to click Enable for this tool.
- Click Save.
- Attendance should now appear in the left sidebar of your course, among the other tools. You can now click on it and begin to take attendance.
Please see the Instructure guide below to learn more about this tool.
