What to do when you move offices

Overview

When moving offices, you may have questions about moving technology equipment like phones and computers. LITS is here to help! Use this guide as a starting place and let us know if you have any questions.

Notify LITS of your move

LITS keeps location information stored about your computer(s) and your phone, which we want to keep updated. This step is especially important when you are moving a phone as we need to keep your campus location updated for 911-routing purposes.

Moving computers and computer accessories

LITS does not move computers or other technology equipment for faculty and staff moving offices. We recommend that you take note of how your work station is set up prior to moving (maybe take some photos) so that you are better prepared to reconnect things after you move.

Facilities Management can move your desktop computer, monitor, and other equipment if they are boxed up.

Once the equipment is moved, we ask that you attempt to reconnect your setup on your own. There is no way you can break anything in trying. If you get stuck and need further support, please reach out to the Technology Help Desk and we can provide more specific guidance.

Moving phones

Moving within the same department, VOIP phone

If you are maintaining your current department affiliation and you have a VOIP phone (the ones with the big digital screens) you should take your phone with you.

  • Just unplug it from the wall and plug it back in in your new office location. It should boot right back up. Review this article for guidance on plugging in your phone
  • Even though you can move the equipment on your own, please do still notify LITS of your office move so that we can update our 911-routing records.

Moving within the same department, analog phone

If you are maintaining your current department affiliation and you have an analog phone, your supervisor/department coordinator should request a phone reassignment for you.

  • Analog phone extensions are tied to their location and can't be moved.

Changing department affiliations

If you're changing departments at the College regardless of the type of phone you currently have, your new supervisor/department coordinator should submit a phone reassignment on your behalf to set you up with a new extension.
