How to send email from a different email address

Overview

If you are a person with multiple email inboxes you use for school or work, you may find that it is helpful to be able to send email from one or both of them as if it were coming from the other email address. You can also set yourself up to be able to send as a Google group address you manage.

Follow the instructions below.

Initiate the process

  1. Open Settings in your email inbox by choosing the gear icon and then See all settings
  2. Go to the Accounts tab
  3. Under the Send mail as heading, choose Add another email address

  1. You will see a pop-up window where you may enter your alternative name and email address
  2. When you're ready, choose Next Step

  1. Google will need to verify your ownership of the alternative email address/alias; Select Send Verification and follow the instructions in the message sent to your chosen address

Verify

The verification email will be sent to the email address you're setting up to send as. Open that message and follow the instructions.

If you don't receive the verification message and you're setting yourself up to send as a Google group, be sure to set the group to allow posts from external members otherwise the verification email will get blocked.

Gotchas

  • If you're setting yourself up to send as a Google group email address, be sure to have the group set to allow external members to post to it while you are working on this process. The verification email that Google sends is considered external, and so will be blocked if you only allow group members or organizational members to post to the group. If you want to have more restrictive posting settings, be sure to change those again after setting yourself up to send mail as the group.
