What is it?
Google Gemini is a generative AI chat app designed to understand and generate text, code, images, audio, and video and interact dynamically with users. Gemini can be used to create new content and images, help brainstorm ideas, draft or summarize writing, explore complex topics, and assist with research and creative work.
How is my data protected?
LITS has made Gemini available because Google has put in place significant safeguards not available in other services.
- What kinds of data are users authorized to provide to Gemini?
- The version of Gemini MHC uses has been reviewed and approved by LITS for use with confidential, internal and public data as defined in the College’s data classification policy.
- Use with restricted data is NOT allowed. Review the Data Handling Procedures for more details.
- Is my data used to train Google's models? No. When logged in with your MHC Google account, Google will not use your information to train their models. This is important so that the general public who use Google Gemini will not see your work show up in answers to their prompts. If you use Gemini with a personal account, Google may use your data for training purposes.
- How long is my data retained? Chats that Mount Holyoke users conduct with Gemini are retained for 3 months, then automatically deleted. Within this time frame, you can hide and rename you chat history, but not delete it.
- How do I allow Gemini to access my MHC Google data for use in chats? Use settings within Gemini to control whether Gemini can access content in your Google Docs, Email, etc.
Who can use it?
Current MHC students, faculty, and staff using their MHC Google accounts
